Human beings love to laugh, and we’re told the average adult laughs 15 - 17 times a day. That’s good, because, as they say, “Laughter is the best medicine.”  It gives us better health, better relationships, and better lives. Researchers are estimating that laughing 100 times is equal to 10 minutes on the rowing machine or 15 minutes on an exercise bike. Laughing has been called “inner jogging” because every system in our body gets a workout when we have a hearty laugh.

Laughing for better health is great, but when laughing makes for better relationships also, that’s an extra bonus. Think about mealtime with the family.
“The most wasted
of all days is
one without
laughter”
— C. E. Cummings —
Sitting around the table — enjoying a meal together — having lots of fun and laughter — this is very special. Not only does laughter assist in food digestion, but the more laughter there is, the more bonding occurs within the family group.  The greater our bond, the more comfortable we feel in each other’s presence.

But this is only true if we are laughing with our family members and not laughing at family members.  Never find a place for cynicism, sarcasm, and empty jests just to get a hype for yourself.  From The Holy Bible we read, “A cheerful heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22) and “A happy heart makes the face cheerful” (Proverbs 15:13).  So bring to your family laughter that is honest, deep, and sincere — expressions of great joy that lift the soul.

Genuine hearty laughter is one of the greatest gifts given to us by our Heavenly Father.  It diminishes our pain, lifts our souls in joyous good cheer, and at the same time provides bright hope for the unknown days ahead.  We share this great gift when we bring smiles and fun and good cheer to those around us.

So laugh with your family every chance you get.  After all, God, our Father, created laughter for a reason — — and Father indeed knows best
